What's behind the cost of Newborn photography?

Quality photography is a valuable investment. Your newborn baby will only be this little once and as we all know time goes by way too fast. Capturing those fleeting moments and having those precious photographs to treasure forever is simply priceless.

When you look back at these images in years to come you won’t be thinking “do you remember how much we paid for these photographs?” No you will be very likely saying things like “how was our baby ever this tiny, where has the time gone, look at how small her feet were…” And all the emotions you felt will come rushing back, the way you felt when you first held your baby, how hard but beautiful those first weeks were without really being able to remember specific details as it went so fast, how strong the love for your child is and how incredible and overwhelming it was when you felt that way for the very first time.

When you are looking for a newborn photographer there are a lot of things to consider but please don’t only compare prices looking for the cheapest option. The most important things to consider when choosing the right photographer for you and your baby is safety, the style of photography and the whole experience your photographer will be providing.

Now let’s have a look at what is involved in the cost of a professional newborn photography session,

There is a lot of cost involved in running a professional photography business. As a photographer you need public liability and professional indemnity insurance to cover your client and yourself. You need to of course pay your tax and also provide yourself with a reasonable income, otherwise why would you run a business?

A lot of money goes into buying professional camera gear, which needs to be updated and maintained more often than you think! I have invested thousands of euros in my camera and lenses alone. The same goes for studio lights and equipment, computers, professional editing software, etc. Another big cost is the hire of a studio space, this list is not exhaustive of course but gives an idea

of how much financial resources go into setting up a photography business.

Newborn photography is a very specific field that requires other investments, such as, the beautiful props I use during my sessions (backdrops, blankets, hats, headbands ,etc) and continuous training.

Newborn posing requires you to be very well informed and trained. SAFETY always comes first. Before I ever even did my first newborn session I did a workshop with a mentor to learn how to safely and comfortably pose newborn babies. I am constantly learning and updating my training in order to offer you the best service possible.

Newborn photography also requires a lot of time. The sessions last up to 4 hours. I am probably only taking photographs 20% of the time, most of the session I will be rocking your baby to sleep, posing your baby safely and making sure he/she is happy and comfortable during the session. I always take my time and stop for feeds and cuddles when needed.

Most people don’t realise how much time is involved before and after sessions :

~ Answering enquiries and sending information to prepare my clients for sessions

~ Setting up the studio and planning out the session

~ Tidying up the studio and washing all the props (lots of washing with newborn photography!)

~ Professional editing of all your images (which can take up to 5 hours)

~ Preparing your private online gallery to select your photos

~ Ordering products, preparing and packaging orders and finally, sending orders!

With the time of the actual session that comes to around 14 hours spent on every newborn session I photograph!

When you hire a photographer not only are you paying for beautiful timeless images, you are paying for the experience. When you look at your photographs you will remember the way you felt on the day and the memories you kept from the session.

I pride myself on my customer service. I want you to enjoy your time in my studio, seeing your gorgeous baby being photographed and capturing those memories that will be a part of your family album forever.

I have been a photographer for 15 years, I studied photography for 4 years and more recently have done online and in person workshops to perfect the art of Newborn photography.

A lot of time, financial investment and love goes into my work and my fees reflect all of this and allow me to run a business that offers great quality to my clients as well as providing for my own family.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of the price of professional photography and what to look for when choosing a photographer.

Most importantly, remember that these times in your life will go past in the blink of an eye and trust me, as a mum myself I can say, you will want beautiful photographs to look back on!
